The Sacred & Profane, Soul & Spirit, Myth & History
As a youngster, Holli was the type to stay up way beyond her bedtime with 3-4 books on her lap devouring them all (grant it there was also a personal pan pizza on the line!). As an adult, Holli found herself more turned on by non-fiction writings - especially the Sacred Profane ones. These books quite literally saved her life and gave her back the deed to her own sexuality (that is a story for another time).
However, in the past ten years or so, finding good fictional books that whisked her away to far off imaginative lands has been surprisingly and frustratingly difficult. She wanted fun, adventure, purpose, meaning and a story that pulled you in and refused to let you go no matter how tired she was. The last one that did that for her (OMG is she really going to admit this?!) was the Twilight Saga. She has purchased or borrowed so many books that just end up one-fourth to maybe one-half read before being tossed into the compost heap.
Why are the adult books for women about one of two things - either the Sacred or the Profane, but not both together?
- Serious, heavy laden topics like kidnappings, sex trafficking, murders and the like? Ones that you absolutely don't want to read before bed.
- Or erotica? Which yes, okay...yes to these - to an extent. Yet, how many versions of friendemies, "my big brother's best friend", fantasy werwolves and vampires or the cougar getting it on can we read before craving something a bit ...more?
That desire for something more, something that explored the hidden caves of desire both literally and figuratively as a gateway to the soul - was birthed during quarantine of the Covid19 time. This desire got Holli wondering if she could turn her conversational, educational and thought-provoking writing style into prose for fiction. And if so - could she weave topics important to modern day women (the Sacred & Profane topics) with ancient myths of women of power, purpose and living with complete autonomy (not defined through and by a man in her life - and his status)? Stories that help women understand their place as Gatekeepers to Life and Death?
Well, for better or worse, Holli decided to launch into this Heroine quest and inviting you along for the wild scrumptious ride. She is calling her writing style "Sacred Profane Historical Fiction."
Her blog (The SPF Files) and Substack is where you will find her fictional, poetic prose and meandering explorations into her thoughts.
In future books she will bravely go dive into topics she finds others still shy away from, or just don't know how to explore. Those Sacred Profane areas that allow the soul to see itself as a blushing lover longing for Her beloved in Fictional and sometimes historical context such as:
- Turning religious myths on their heads (or Yonis), resurrecting the ancient Goddesses and Her Sacred Rites - including the Sacred Marriage to Her Bridegroom.
- Myths and their power to entertain, inspire and heal (when we see the ENTIRE myth and stop attempting to make them logical, rational and actual historical events)
- How Patriarchy and Religions have caged the Spirit & Soul of both Women & Men
...And so much more!
